"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." — Colossians 3:23
For roughly thirty years, the Son of God worked with His hands. Before He preached the Sermon on the Mount, before He healed the sick and raised the dead, before He went to the cross — Jesus was a tekton. The Greek word is often translated "carpenter," but it more broadly means a craftsman, a builder, a worker in wood and stone. The Creator of the universe spent most of His earthly life in a trade shop.
This should tell us something about how God views vocational work.
The Modern Lie About Trades
Our culture has created a false hierarchy: college-educated professionals at the top, tradespeople somewhere below. This is not Biblical. It is not even practical. The world desperately needs skilled electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, mechanics, and builders. These are the people who keep the lights on, the water running, and the roofs over our heads.
> "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I don't need you!' And the head cannot say to the feet, 'I don't need you!'" — 1 Corinthians 12:21
Every honest vocation is a calling from God. A plumber who fixes a broken pipe for a widow is doing the work of Christ. An electrician who wires a church building is serving the body of believers. A carpenter who builds a home for a family is echoing the work of Jesus Himself.
Work as Worship
At Christ-Centered Academy, we teach that all work done for the glory of God is worship. Colossians 3:23 does not say "whatever academic work you do." It says "whatever you do." When a student learns to measure a board accurately, cut it cleanly, and join it securely — and does so with diligence, honesty, and gratitude — that student is worshiping God with their hands.
This is why our trades curriculum is built on the same Biblical foundation as every other subject. We do not separate "spiritual" learning from "practical" learning. The God who inspired the Psalms also designed the physics that makes a load-bearing wall stand.
Our Trades Vision
Christ-Centered Academy is developing a comprehensive vocational training track that includes:
- Carpentry and Woodworking — From basic hand tools to framing, finishing, and cabinetry
- Electrical Fundamentals — Residential wiring, circuit design, NEC code, safety practices
- Plumbing Basics — Pipe systems, fixture installation, drainage, water supply
- Automotive Maintenance — Engine fundamentals, routine maintenance, diagnostic reasoning
- Security Systems — Basic electronics, alarm systems, camera installation, network security
- OSHA Safety Certification — Workplace safety standards that protect both the worker and those they serve
Each track includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on project guides. Students learn the "why" alongside the "how" — understanding the science behind the trade, not just memorizing procedures.
Trades as Service
> "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." — Mark 10:45
We teach our students that trades are fundamentally about serving others. When you learn to wire a house, you gain the ability to provide safe shelter. When you learn to repair an engine, you gain the ability to help a neighbor get to work. When you learn to build, you gain the ability to construct churches, schools, and homes in communities that need them.
Our future vision includes apprenticeship matching — connecting Christ-Centered Academy students with godly tradespeople in their communities who can mentor them hands-on. A student who has completed our carpentry coursework could be matched with a Christian carpenter for real-world experience. This echoes the Biblical model of discipleship: an older, experienced believer training the next generation.
For Missionaries and Developing Nations
Trades education has a special urgency for missionary families and communities in developing nations. A young person who can wire a building, repair a water pump, or build a sturdy structure is an asset to any community. These skills save lives, improve living conditions, and open doors for the Gospel.
Christ-Centered Academy's trades curriculum will be available offline, with printable project guides and step-by-step video instruction that can be downloaded once and used anywhere.
Jesus was a carpenter. There is no higher endorsement of vocational work. Let us train the next generation to work with their hands, serve with their hearts, and glorify God in every task.
