Letter F and Rhyming — Fun with Sound Patterns
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." — Psalm 119:105
Our Sixth Letter!
Can you believe it? You have already learned five letters — A, B, C, D, and E! Today we learn letter number six: F. And we will also discover something wonderful called rhyming!
Meet the Letter F
What Does F Look Like?
Uppercase F looks almost like the letter E, but without the bottom line:
F
To write uppercase F:
- Draw a tall straight line going down
- Draw a line going right at the top
- Draw a line going right at the middle
- (No line at the bottom — that is what makes F different from E!)
Lowercase f has a curve at the top and a cross in the middle:
f
To write lowercase f:
- Start near the top and curve to the left and up
- Come back down with a straight line
- Draw a short line across the middle
What Sound Does F Make?
The F sound is made by gently placing your top teeth on your bottom lip and blowing air out: /f/! Say it: /f/ — /f/ — /f/!
Feel the air on your fingers when you make the /f/ sound. It is like a soft breeze! God gave us the ability to make this gentle sound.
F Is for Father
One of the most important F words in the Bible is Father. God is our heavenly Father! He loves us and cares for us. The word "Father" starts with the letter F.
More F words: Fish, Flower, Friend, Fun, Family, Fox, Fire, Fruit, Faith
Now Let Us Learn About Rhyming!
What Is Rhyming?
Rhyming means two words that sound the same at the END. Listen:
- Cat — Hat: Both end with the /at/ sound. They rhyme!
- Dog — Log: Both end with the /og/ sound. They rhyme!
- Fun — Sun: Both end with the /un/ sound. They rhyme!
Rhyming words are like sound twins — they do not look the same at the beginning, but they match at the end.
Why Is Rhyming Special?
God gave us ears that notice patterns in sound (Proverbs 20:12). Rhymes make language beautiful and help us remember things. Many of the Psalms in the Bible use beautiful sound patterns — that is one reason we remember verses so well when we memorize them!
Let Us Practice Rhyming!
I will say a word. Can you think of a word that rhymes with it?
- Cat rhymes with... bat, hat, mat, sat, fat, rat!
- Dog rhymes with... log, fog, hog, frog!
- Bed rhymes with... red, fed, led, said!
- Fun rhymes with... sun, run, bun!
- Fish rhymes with... dish, wish!
Clap and Chant!
Let us clap our hands while we say rhyming pairs:
(clap) CAT (clap) HAT (clap clap) (clap) DOG (clap) LOG (clap clap) (clap) FUN (clap) SUN (clap clap) (clap) BIG (clap) DIG (clap clap)
Rhyming is FUN! And "fun" starts with our letter of the day: F!
Do These Words Rhyme?
Let us play a game. Do these word pairs rhyme? (Say YES or NO)
- Cat and Hat — YES! They both end in /at/
- Dog and Cat — NO! They end in different sounds
- Fox and Box — YES! They both end in /ox/
- Bed and Red — YES! They both end in /ed/
- Fish and Fun — NO! They end in different sounds

A Thought to Carry
Rhyming words are a sign of the beautiful patterns God put into language. Just as He put patterns in nature — stripes on a zebra, spots on a fawn, rings in a tree — He put patterns in our words too. God is a God of order and beauty (1 Corinthians 14:33), and even our language reflects His design!
