Our Singing Voice — A Gift from God

"O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth." — Psalm 96:1

God Gave You a Voice!

Did you know that God gave you something very special? He gave you a voice! You use your voice every single day. You use it to talk to your family, to say "please" and "thank you," and to tell your friends how you feel. But today we are going to learn about something extra special your voice can do — it can sing!

Singing is one of the most wonderful gifts God gave to people. All through the Bible, God's people sing songs to praise Him. King David sang. Moses and the people of Israel sang. Mary, the mother of Jesus, sang. And God wants you to sing too!

"O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth." — Psalm 96:1

God does not say, "Only grown-ups can sing." He does not say, "Only people with perfect voices can sing." He says all the earth should sing to Him! That includes you!

Speaking Voice vs. Singing Voice

You actually have more than one kind of voice. Let us learn about two of them:

Your Speaking Voice

Your speaking voice is the voice you use when you talk. Right now, if you say "Hello, my name is ___," you are using your speaking voice. Your speaking voice stays on one level most of the time. It goes up and down a little bit, but not very much.

Try it: Say "I love God" in your regular speaking voice.

Your Singing Voice

Your singing voice is different. When you sing, your voice goes up and down in a special way. It follows a melody — that means it moves to different pitches, like climbing up and down a musical staircase.

Try it: Sing "I love God" on any little tune you like. Did you hear how your voice moved up and down? That is your singing voice!

Your Whispering Voice

You also have a whispering voice. This is the quiet, gentle voice you use in a library or when someone is sleeping. Whispering is not singing and not regular talking — it is extra soft.

Your Calling Voice

And you have a calling voice — the loud voice you might use outside to call a friend who is far away. "Hey! Come over here!" That is your calling voice.

How Does Singing Work?

When you sing, air comes up from your lungs (the two spongy parts inside your chest that help you breathe). The air passes through your vocal cords — two tiny flaps inside your throat. When the air makes your vocal cords vibrate (shake very fast), sound comes out!

God designed your vocal cords perfectly. He made them just the right size and shape for your voice. Psalm 139:14 says, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." That includes the amazing voice God put inside you!

Why Do We Sing to God?

We sing to God because:

  1. God tells us to — The Bible has over 400 references to singing! God loves when His people sing.
  2. It makes us happy — Singing fills our hearts with joy.
  3. It helps us remember — Songs help us remember Bible verses and God's truths.
  4. It brings us together — When we sing as a group, we feel connected to each other and to God.

Our First Song

Today, let us try singing a very simple song together. We will just sing the words of our Bible verse:

"O sing unto the LORD a new song" (Psalm 96:1)

Your teacher will help you with a simple tune. Listen first, then sing along. Do not worry about being perfect — God loves to hear your voice!

A Thought to Carry

God made your voice unique. No one else in the whole world sounds exactly like you when you sing. That is because God made you special. Your voice is a gift, and when you use it to sing praises to God, it makes Him glad!

Hands-On Activity

Practice using your four voices: speaking, singing, whispering, and calling. Say "God is good" in each voice. Then sing Psalm 96:1 with your best singing voice. Try singing it softly, then a little louder!
