Movement Review — Locomotor Skills Assessment
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's." — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Our Bodies Are God's Temples!
This week we have learned so many amazing things about how our bodies can move! We walked, we ran, we jumped, we hopped, we galloped, we skipped, we did bear crawls and crab walks and frog jumps! We have been active, and that is wonderful!
Today we are going to review everything we have learned and show off all the skills our bodies can do. But first, let us talk about an important Bible verse.
Your Body Is a Temple
The apostle Paul wrote a letter to the Christians in a city called Corinth. In that letter, he said something very important: "Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost." (1 Corinthians 6:19)
What is a temple? A temple is a very special building — a place where God lives! Paul is saying that if you believe in Jesus, God's Holy Spirit lives inside you. Your body is not just a body — it is God's home!
That means we should take care of our bodies. We should:
- Move them — exercise and play keep our bodies healthy
- Feed them well — good food gives us energy
- Rest them — sleep helps our bodies grow and heal
- Keep them clean — washing and hygiene honor God
When we do these things, we are glorifying God in our body — just like the verse says!
Review Time — Show What You Can Do!
Let us review all our locomotor skills! A locomotor skill is any movement that takes you from one place to another.
Skill 1: Walking
Walk across the room with good form. Remember: heel-toe, arms swinging, head up, stand tall!
Skill 2: Running
Run to the far cone and back. Remember: pump your arms, land on the balls of your feet, stop on signal!
Skill 3: Jumping
Do three standing long jumps in a row. Remember: bend knees, swing arms, land softly with bent knees!
Skill 4: Hopping
Hop on your right foot five times, then hop on your left foot five times. Remember: balance on one foot, push off, land on the same foot!
Skill 5: Galloping
Gallop across the room. Remember: one foot leads, the other catches up — step-together, step-together!
Skill 6: Skipping
Skip back to the start. Remember: step-hop, step-hop — alternating feet!
The Obstacle Course Challenge
Now let us put it all together in one big obstacle course!
- Walk along the balance line
- Run to the first cone
- Jump over three floor markers
- Hop through the hoop circles
- Gallop around the cone circle
- Skip back to the finish!
Take your time and do each skill with good form. This is not a race — it is a celebration of what your body can do!
What Is the Fastest a Human Has Run?
Here is a fun fact: the fastest a human has ever run is nearly 28 miles per hour. That was Usain Bolt, a runner from Jamaica. But a cheetah can run 70 miles per hour! God designed each creature with the speed it needs. Humans may not be the fastest, but God gave us something most animals do not have — endurance. A human can run for hours and hours. Most animals cannot!
Celebrating Our Bodies
Today, let us take a moment to thank God for our bodies. Think about everything your body did this week:
- Your legs walked, ran, jumped, hopped, galloped, and skipped
- Your arms pumped and helped you balance
- Your brain learned new skills and remembered how to do them
- Your heart pumped blood to give your muscles energy
- Your lungs breathed in air to keep you going
All of this was designed by God. You are fearfully and wonderfully made! (Psalm 139:14)
What We Learned This Unit
- Walking — heel-toe, arms swinging, head up
- Running — arms pumping, land softly, stop on signal
- Jumping — two feet, bend knees on landing
- Hopping — one foot, builds balance
- Galloping — one foot leads, other catches up
- Skipping — step-hop alternating feet
- Our bodies are temples of God — we honor Him by moving and caring for them!
