God Made Families — Adam and Eve

"The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.'" — Genesis 2:18

In the Very Beginning

Do you remember the story of creation? God made the light, the sky, the land, the sun and moon and stars, the fish and birds, and the animals. Everything God made was good!

But then God said something different. He said, "It is not good for the man to be alone." This is the very first time God said something was NOT good. Adam was living in the beautiful Garden of Eden. He had animals all around him. He had delicious fruit to eat. But he did not have another person to talk to, play with, or share his life with.

God Makes the First Family

So what did God do? He caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. Then God took one of Adam's ribs and made a woman — Eve! When Adam woke up and saw Eve, he was so happy! He said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh" (Genesis 2:23). Adam and Eve became the very first husband and wife. They were the very first family.

God planned families from the very beginning. Families were not an accident. They were not just something people decided to do on their own. God created families on purpose because He knew people needed each other.

What Is a Family?

A family is a group of people who belong together. Families come in different sizes. Some families have a mother, a father, and children. Some families have grandparents living with them too. Some families are small, and some are big. But every family is a gift from God.

Who is in your family? Think about the people who live in your home. You might have:

  • A mother (or mama, mom, mommy)
  • A father (or daddy, dad, papa)
  • Brothers — boys who share your parents
  • Sisters — girls who share your parents
  • Grandparents — your parents' parents!

Can you say each person's name? Try counting how many people are in your family!

Families Are God's Idea

Here is something wonderful to remember: God thought of families before anyone else did. He did not have to make families. He chose to. He looked at Adam and said, "You need someone." Then He made Eve, and together they became the first family.

This means your family is not just a nice thing. Your family is part of God's plan. He gave you the family you have because He loves you and knows exactly what you need.

Why Families Matter

God made families because people need:

  1. Love — Someone to hug you and say "I love you"
  2. Help — Someone to take care of you when you are small
  3. Teaching — Someone to teach you about God and the world
  4. Fun — Someone to play with and laugh with
  5. Safety — Someone to keep you safe and protect you

When your parents tuck you in at night, they are doing what God planned. When your brother or sister plays with you, that is God's design at work. When your grandmother tells you a Bible story, she is passing on God's truth — just as families have done for thousands of years!

A Thought to Carry

Every person on earth is part of a family. Every family on earth goes all the way back to Adam and Eve — the first family God made. That means, in a way, all people are one big family! God loves every family on earth.

"Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past." — Deuteronomy 32:7

This verse tells us to think about the families that came before us. Your grandparents had grandparents, and their grandparents had grandparents — all the way back to Adam and Eve. Isn't that amazing?

A Prayer

Dear God, thank You for creating families. Thank You for my family. Thank You for giving me people who love me. Help me to love them back and to be kind and helpful at home. Amen.
