God Made Light
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." — Genesis 1:1
The Very Beginning
Before anything existed — before the sun, the moon, the stars, before any animals or people, before even the ground you walk on — there was God. God has always existed. He had no beginning and will have no end.
And God decided to create.
Day One
The Bible tells us that in the very beginning, "the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep" (Genesis 1:2). Imagine complete darkness — no light anywhere at all!
Then God spoke. He said the very first words recorded in all of history:
"Let there be light." — Genesis 1:3
And there was light! Just like that. God spoke, and light appeared. He didn't need a flashlight or a lamp or the sun. He simply spoke, and light came into being.
God Saw That It Was Good
The Bible tells us something beautiful: "God saw that the light was good" (Genesis 1:4). God looked at what He had made and was pleased with it. The light was good because God made it.
Then God did something else wonderful — He separated the light from the darkness. He called the light "day" and the darkness "night." This was the very first day.
What This Teaches Us
- God is powerful — He can create anything just by speaking
- God makes good things — Everything He creates is good
- God brings order — He separated light from darkness, creating day and night
- God is the beginning of everything — Nothing exists without Him
A Thought to Carry
Just as God brought light into the darkness at creation, He brings light into our lives. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12). When we feel scared or confused, we can remember that God is greater than any darkness.
