God Made the Sun, Moon, and Stars
"God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars." — Genesis 1:16
Day Four
Remember Day 1, when God created light itself? Now on Day 4, God made the light-holders — the objects that would carry and display that light.
He made the sun — the "greater light" — to shine during the day. The sun gives us warmth, helps plants grow, and lights up our world.
He made the moon — the "lesser light" — to shine at night. The moon reflects the sun's light, giving us a gentle glow even in darkness.
And then the Bible says something almost casually: "He also made the stars." Just like that! As if making billions of stars was a small thing for God. Scientists tell us there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the beaches on earth. God made every single one.
Why Did God Make Them?
The Bible tells us God made these lights for specific purposes:
- To separate day from night — structure for our daily lives
- To mark seasons, days, and years — so we can track time
- To give light on the earth — so we can see
- To declare God's glory — "The heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1)
A Night-Sky Wonder
If you go outside on a clear night, far from city lights, you can see thousands of stars. Each one was placed there by God. He even knows their names! "He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name" (Psalm 147:4).
If God knows every star by name, how much more does He know and love you?
What This Teaches Us
- God is incredibly powerful — He made billions of stars with a word
- God gives us what we need — Light, warmth, seasons, time
- God's creation points to Him — The stars declare His glory
- God knows and loves each of us — More than we can imagine
